From full house refurbishments to single-room transformations, we renovate homes across Chelmsford and Essex with care and precision.
A general renovation is one of the biggest changes you can make to a home, and getting it right in a property like a Chelmsford Victorian terrace or a post war Essex semi takes more than enthusiasm. Whether you are reworking a tired layout, updating every room to a single standard or bringing a period property back to life, Abbotts Build Hub manages the whole job from first sketch to final coat. With more than 25 years of hands on experience across Chelmsford and the wider Essex area, we treat your home as a place to live rather than a building site to occupy.
Because building, plumbing, electrics and finishing all sit under one roof with us, you deal with one accountable team rather than chasing separate trades who each blame the last. That single point of responsibility is what keeps a renovation on programme and on budget. It also means the awkward overlaps, where a new radiator meets a replastered wall or a rewire runs behind fresh joinery, are planned in advance instead of discovered halfway through the works.
Renovation covers everything from a single room upgrade to a full house refurbishment, and the scope shapes every decision that follows. A whole house project usually runs in a clear sequence: strip out, structural work, first fix, plastering, second fix and then finishing. First fix is the hidden work that happens before walls are closed up, such as pipework, cabling, framing and drainage. Second fix is the visible detail that follows the plaster, such as sockets, radiators, doors, skirting and sanitaryware. Understanding that order helps you see why a new kitchen or bathroom cannot simply be dropped in at the end.
A typical refurbishment includes:
The choices that cause the most stress later are usually the ones made too quickly at the start. Budgeting honestly comes first, and we always suggest holding a contingency of around ten to fifteen per cent for older Essex homes, because opening up floors and walls can reveal old wiring, damp or failed timber that no one could quote for in advance. Layout is the second decision. Moving a bathroom or knocking two rooms together can transform how a house feels, but it affects drainage, structure and building control, so it pays to settle the plan before anyone lifts a tool.
Where a project needs it, we coordinate building control approval and structural engineers so the paperwork keeps pace with the work rather than holding it up. Notifiable electrical and gas work is carried out to the relevant building regulations, with certification arranged through appropriately registered specialists. You should also decide early whether you will live on site through the works or move out. Staying put keeps costs down but means dust, noise and a rota of usable rooms, while moving out lets us work faster and phase less.
As an established firm rooted in Chelmsford, we care about how our work looks to the neighbours and how it feels to live in years later. Handling the trades ourselves keeps the standard consistent whether we are fitting a new kitchen, refitting a bathroom or bringing tired walls back to a smooth finish with careful plastering. We are fully insured, our workmanship is guaranteed and every quote is free and without obligation, so you can plan with confidence before committing a penny.
We start with a free site visit to understand what you want and what the building will allow. From there we prepare a clear, itemised quote and a realistic programme, so you can see how the phases fit together and where the money goes. Larger jobs are often better run in stages, letting you spread the cost and keep part of the home usable. Throughout the project you have one point of contact who keeps you updated, manages the trades and handles any building control sign off.
We renovate homes across Chelmsford and Essex, including Great Baddow, Springfield, Writtle, Danbury, Broomfield and Chelmer Village, as well as Maldon, Braintree, Witham, Billericay and Brentwood. If you are nearby and unsure whether we reach you, please ask. We also work right across the wider county, from Colchester and Southend to Basildon, Harlow, Brentwood and Braintree, so take a look at all the areas we cover.
A well planned renovation adds real comfort and lasting value to your home, and it starts with a proper conversation about what you want to achieve. For honest advice and a free, no obligation quote, request your quote and we will arrange a visit at a time that suits you.

No nasty surprises on the bill and everything was exactly where they said it would be. Genuinely a relief after some of the horror stories friends had told us.”
“The renovation itself is excellent and the workmanship guarantee gave us real peace of mind. My one small gripe was a bit of back and forth getting the tiling confirmed at the start, but once things were underway it all ran smoothly. Would use them again.”
“You could tell they treated the house as if it were their own, covering the floors, protecting the stairs, never cutting a corner where it counted. That respect meant a great deal to us.”
“Really pleased with how the refurbishment came out and the team were polite the whole way through. The only thing I would mention is that the final week ran a couple of days over what we were told, though they kept us informed at every point. Still happy to recommend them.”
“A multi room job across the ground floor and it never once felt chaotic. They worked cleanly, kept the dust to a minimum, and always explained what was coming next.”
“From the initial quote to the final sign off we always knew exactly where we stood. They handled the plastering, the joinery and the decorating in an order that made sense, brought the right people in at the right time, and the accountability was just as promised. The house has never looked better, and knowing the team was fully insured throughout mattered a lot to us.”
“We took on the whole house at once, which felt daunting, but from the first walk round it was clear they knew how to run a job this size. Every room was touched, from the bedrooms down to the hallway, and the finish is better than we dared hope for. Twenty five years of doing this really shows in the small details. I would have them back without a second thought.”
“We stayed put through the works with two young children, which I was dreading, but they were mindful of that from day one and kept a safe route through the house at all times. Couldn't fault their consideration or the end result.”
“Our 1930s semi had barely been touched by the previous owners and was crying out for modernising. It now feels warm, solid and ready for the next thirty years.”
It depends on the size and condition of the property, but a full refurbishment of a typical Essex three bedroom home usually runs from around eight to sixteen weeks. Structural changes, bespoke joinery and long lead items such as kitchens can extend that. We give you a realistic programme alongside your quote so there are no surprises.
Many internal renovations fall under permitted development and need building control rather than planning permission, for example structural openings, rewires and new bathrooms. Planning permission is more likely if you are extending, altering the roofline, or the property is listed or in a conservation area. Where approval or a structural engineer is needed, we coordinate it for you.
You can usually stay, and many of our Chelmsford clients do to keep costs down, as long as you accept dust, noise and a rota of usable rooms. For larger projects, or when the kitchen and only bathroom are out of action at the same time, moving out lets us work faster and often shortens the overall programme. We will talk both options through honestly at the quote stage.
For older properties we suggest holding around ten to fifteen per cent of the budget as a contingency. Opening up floors and walls in period Essex homes can reveal old wiring, damp or failed timber that nobody can see when quoting. A sensible contingency means these are dealt with without derailing the project.
