Plastering questions, answered
It depends on the coat and the conditions, but a fresh skim usually needs anywhere from a few days to around two weeks, while re-plastered walls and sand and cement render can take several weeks. The surface should be an even, pale colour with no darker damp patches before you decorate. We always advise starting with a thinned mist coat rather than full strength paint, as this lets the plaster continue to breathe.
In most cases, yes. If the artex is sound and well bonded, we can prepare it and apply a fresh skim for a smooth, modern finish, and where a ceiling is loose or heavily textured we may overboard it first. One important note for older Essex homes: textured coatings applied before the year 2000 can contain asbestos, so we recommend having it tested before any work disturbs it.
Sand and cement render is the traditional choice, built up in coats and then painted once fully cured, and it is hard wearing and cost effective. Monocouche is a modern through coloured render that carries its colour all the way through, so it needs no painting and is simpler to maintain. The right option depends on your property, the look you want and your budget, and we are happy to talk both through on site.
Cracking is almost always a symptom rather than the real problem. Common causes include the wrong preparation for the background, plaster applied too thickly or dried too quickly, structural movement, or underlying damp. We always look for the cause first and put that right before re-plastering, so the repair lasts rather than reappearing within a few months.
