Flues & Woodburners

Flues & Woodburners in Chelmsford & Essex

We supply and install efficient flues and woodburners across Essex, delivering safe operation, high heat output and a cosy atmosphere. Our solutions integrate beautifully with your home's style, offering warmth, comfort and lasting quality.

A woodburning stove brings genuine warmth and character to a home, and across Chelmsford and the wider Essex area it is one of the improvements homeowners ask us about most. Whether you are opening up an old fireplace, replacing a tired appliance or adding a stove to a room that has never had one, the work needs planning. A stove is only as good as the flue behind it, the hearth beneath it and the air supply around it, and getting those details right is what separates a safe, efficient installation from one that smokes or fails to meet regulations.

At Abbotts Build Hub we handle the whole job under one roof, from assessing your chimney and choosing the right appliance to the building work, flue and finishing. Because our building, plumbing, electrical and finishing trades sit within one accountable team, there is no juggling separate contractors when a project touches structural openings, hearths or making good afterwards. We have spent more than 25 years working on homes throughout Essex, and we treat every flue and stove installation as building work to be carried out to current standards.

What fitting a flue or woodburner involves

Most installations begin with an inspection of your chimney or the space where the stove will sit. We check the flue, the condition of the brickwork and whether the chimney can be lined or needs work first. From there the job can include forming or extending a hearth, fitting a flexible flue liner up an existing chimney or building a twin-wall insulated system where there is no chimney at all, then connecting the appliance and testing that it draws correctly. Where the chimney is in poor condition, our chimney stack rebuild service can restore a sound structure to line into.

The key decisions to get right

A few choices shape how well your stove performs and how it complies, so they are worth understanding before work starts.

  • Woodburning or multi-fuel: a dedicated woodburner burns logs on a flat bed, while a multi-fuel stove adds a grate and ashpan so you can also burn approved smokeless fuels. This affects efficiency, running costs and how you use the stove day to day.
  • Flue liners and twin-wall systems: an existing masonry chimney is usually fitted with a flexible stainless steel liner sized to the stove, while a property with no chimney needs an insulated twin-wall flue routed internally or up an external wall.
  • Hearths and surrounds: the hearth must protect the floor from heat and falling embers and meet minimum dimensions, and any surround should use heat-resistant, non-combustible materials at the correct distances from the stove.
  • Air supply and ventilation: a stove needs enough combustion air to burn cleanly, and larger outputs or airtight modern homes often require a dedicated air vent to the outside.
  • Heat output and efficiency: sizing the stove to the room matters. An oversized appliance tends to be run low and smoky, while one too small will never heat the space, so we match output in kilowatts to the room.
  • Compliance and safe operation: solid-fuel installations are notifiable work and must meet current building regulations, including Document J for combustion appliances and flues.

Certification matters. Abbotts Build Hub is a HETAS registered installer, so your solid-fuel and stove installation is carried out to current building regulations, including Document J, and self-certified through the HETAS competent person scheme. You receive a certificate of compliance for your records without needing a separate building control application. A carbon monoxide alarm is also required in the room.

Why choose Abbotts Build Hub

A stove is rarely a standalone job. Opening up a fireplace, forming a hearth or routing a twin-wall flue often brings structural, plumbing and finishing work together, and having one team means details are not lost between trades. If your stove is part of a wider project, we can fold it into our general renovation work so the timeline and budget stay under one roof. Once the installation is done, our plastering team can make good around the opening and surround. We are fully insured, our workmanship is guaranteed, and we coordinate building control and structural engineers when a project calls for it.

FAQs

Flues & Woodburners questions, answered

Yes. Installing a solid-fuel stove is notifiable work under the building regulations, and it must meet Document J, which covers combustion appliances, flues and hearths. As a HETAS registered installer, we self-certify the installation through the HETAS competent person scheme and you receive a certificate of compliance, so there is no separate building control application to make.

Yes. Where there is no existing chimney, we install an insulated twin-wall flue system, which can be routed up inside the property and through the roof or externally up an outside wall. This lets you place a stove in almost any room, provided there is a safe route for the flue and adequate clearance from combustible materials.

In most cases a flexible stainless steel liner is fitted inside an existing masonry chimney, sized to suit your stove, which improves the draught and keeps the flue safe and easy to sweep. A good quality liner typically carries a long manufacturer guarantee when it is matched correctly to the fuel and swept regularly. During our inspection we will tell you whether your chimney can be lined as it is or needs attention first.

Parts of Chelmsford and other Essex towns fall within smoke control areas, where you can only burn authorised fuels or use an exempt appliance. Many modern stoves are DEFRA exempt and can be used in these areas, so it is worth checking the rules for your address before choosing an appliance. We can help you select a stove that suits your location.

A flue serving a woodburning or multi-fuel stove should generally be swept at least once a year, and more often if you burn regularly or use unseasoned wood. Regular sweeping keeps the flue drawing well, reduces the risk of chimney fires and helps your stove run efficiently. You should also fit and test a carbon monoxide alarm in the room and burn only dry, well-seasoned wood.
