Learn more about House ExtensionsWe offer expert chimney stack rebuild services across Essex, protecting the safety, performance and appearance of your home. From brickwork repairs to complete rebuilds, our skilled team uses precise craftsmanship to restore your chimney to the highest standards.
A chimney stack is one of the most exposed parts of any home, standing above the roofline where it takes the full force of Essex weather all year round. Across Chelmsford and the surrounding villages, many houses carry brick stacks built decades ago, and their mortar joints, flaunching and leadwork slowly weather until damp, loose bricks or a leaning stack begin to cause real problems inside the home. Abbotts Build Hub rebuilds, rebeds and repairs chimney stacks so they stand square, shed water properly and stay safe for years to come.
We are an established building and renovation firm based in Chelmsford with more than 25 years of experience, and we handle chimney work with one accountable team rather than passing you between separate trades. Because our builders, roofers and finishing crews all sit under one roof, the brickwork, the leadwork and the making good of your roof are coordinated properly, so you are not left chasing different contractors to close the job out.
A rebuild means carefully taking the stack down to a sound level, often to just above the roofline, and building it back up in matching brick with fresh mortar. We renew or reuse the chimney pots, form a new sand and cement flaunching to weather the top, and renew the lead flashing and soakers where the stack meets the roof. Where a stack is beyond economical repair or no longer used, we can remove it entirely and make the roof watertight, tying in new rafters, felt, battens and tiles so there is no sign a stack was ever there.
Every stack is different, so we assess the height, the number of flues, the condition of the brick and the surrounding roof covering before we quote. Safe access matters as much as the brickwork itself, so proper scaffolding goes up to give a stable working platform at height rather than working off a ladder.
The first question is usually whether to repoint or rebuild. If the bricks are sound and only the mortar joints have eroded, raking out and repointing with a suitable mortar can add many years of life at a fraction of the cost. Once bricks are spalling, where frost has worked into the face and blown it off, or the stack is leaning because the joints have failed internally, a rebuild is the honest answer.
Matching the existing brick is a craft in itself. We source reclaimed or close-match bricks so a rebuilt stack sits comfortably with the rest of your home rather than standing out, and we get the mortar mix and colour right so it neither looks wrong nor traps moisture in the brick. Good weatherproofing comes from the details, a well formed flaunching that throws water clear, sound lead flashing dressed into the mortar courses, and the right pot and cowl to suit whether the flue is live, capped or ventilated.
Chimney work rarely stands on its own, and it usually overlaps with the roof around it. Because we also carry out roofing and roof repairs, we can renew tiles, valleys and flashing at the same time and leave the whole area sound. If your stack still serves a woodburner or open fire, the team handling flues and woodburners can advise on lining, pots and cowls so the appliance draws safely. Larger jobs sit naturally alongside our general renovation work. We are fully insured, our workmanship is guaranteed, and every quote is free with no obligation. Where the work needs it, we coordinate building control approval and any structural engineer input, with certification arranged through appropriately registered specialists.
We start with a visit to look at the stack and the roof, talk through your options and give you a free written quote. Once you are happy, we book in the scaffold, carry out the rebuild or repair, renew the leadwork and flaunching, then clear away and leave the roof clean and watertight. You deal with the same team from the first visit to the final check.
We work throughout Chelmsford and across Essex, including Great Baddow, Springfield, Writtle, Danbury, Galleywood, Broomfield, Maldon, Braintree, Witham, Billericay and Brentwood. If your home sits anywhere in this part of Essex, there is a good chance we are already working nearby. We also work right across the wider county, from Colchester and Southend to Basildon, Harlow, Brentwood and Braintree, so take a look at all the areas we cover.

“The stack above our bedroom had a real lean to it and every gale left me nervous it might come down. Abbotts took it back to the roofline and rebuilt it dead straight. Solid as anything now.”
“Rebuilt our chimney stack over two days and made a properly neat job of it.”
“Came out, had a proper look and talked me through what actually needed doing rather than what would cost the most. Chimney repointed and capped, and I'm very happy.”
“Over the years the top courses and the coping had worked loose. They rebuilt the top of the stack, reset the coping and repointed the corbelling. Clearly built to last.”
“Water had been getting in around the chimney for a couple of winters and nobody could pin down why. Turned out the flaunching had gone and the old flashing was more or less shot. They renewed the flaunching, fitted new lead flashing and had it buttoned up before the cold weather set in. Genuinely relieved to have it sorted.”
“We no longer use the old fireplace so had the redundant stack taken off altogether. They removed it, tiled over neatly and you'd never know a chimney had been there. The roof looks all the better for it.”
“From start to finish the place was left spotless. Every bit of old brick and debris was cleared each evening and the drive swept before they went. Lovely job on the stack, too.”
“The scaffolding went up safely and came down just as quickly once the rebuild was finished. The whole thing was handled properly and I felt the house was in good hands the entire time.”
“Years of sea air had left the bricks on our chimney crumbling and pitted. They swapped out the worst of them, repointed the rest and it has shrugged off the winter gales since.”
It comes down to the condition of the bricks, not just the mortar. If the bricks are sound and only the joints have worn back, repointing is usually enough and far cheaper. Once bricks are spalling or the stack is leaning, the internal joints have failed and a rebuild is the safer choice. We give an honest assessment before you commit to anything.
Yes. If a stack is redundant and no longer serves a fire or appliance, we can take it down and make the roof fully watertight, tying in new rafters, felt, battens and tiles. Removing a redundant stack also takes weight off the roof structure and removes a common source of damp. We always check whether the flue serves any other appliance before removing anything.
In almost all cases, yes. A chimney stack sits at the highest and most exposed point of the roof, so a proper scaffold gives a safe, stable platform to work from and to move materials up and down. Working off a ladder at that height is neither safe nor good practice. The scaffold is included in the quote we give you.
We always aim to. We source reclaimed or close-match bricks and mix the mortar to suit the colour and strength of your existing brickwork, so a rebuilt stack blends in rather than standing out. Getting the mortar right also matters technically, as too hard a mix can trap moisture and damage the brick. On older Essex properties this attention to matching makes a real difference to the finished look.
Most straightforward rebuilds and repairs count as like-for-like repair and do not need approval. If the work changes the flue, affects a shared party wall or involves structural alterations, approval may be needed, and we coordinate that for you. Where certification is required, it is arranged through appropriately registered specialists.
